Laguna de Apoyo is a very good alternative for those who practive aquatic sports or for the ones who just want to refresh and distract a bit in a very serene environment.

Located not too far from the Capital City or Granada, Laguna de Apoyo is an excellent getaway site that provides, most of all, tranquility. One could feel the peacefulness as early as entering the road leading to the lake, which first passeses through the communities of Diriomito and Pacayita. From the entry, off the Managua-Granada Highway, to all the way down is roughly a 15-km drive. The last 4 kms is the downhill to the lake, very steep at times yet accessible to small cars. At this point, there is another panoramic angle of the surroundings. While driving down, one could already feel the freshness with the cool wind coming from the very dense vegetation. Once down there, everything is rewarding.

There are some restaurants for those who would like to eat there, located just steps from the shore. One could feast on a delicious fish right from the clean water of this gorgeous lake. If not interested in eating, one could just go to the shore and take a sun bath while enjoying the quietness, the sunshine and the beautiful scenery. However, considering that this is a volcanic lake, the sand is pretty dark but of course, clean.

If the cool wind is not enough to refresh you, maybe the cool water will. Apoyo is a very good place to swim because it doesn't have big waves and in fact, it's very rare when it does have waves; again, for the reason that it's a volcanic lake. Since it possesses very clear water, it's an excellent place to practice diving. Of course, for those who have the equiptment.

For instance, if you pay a small price to a local fisherman, he could take you on an thrilling boat ride around the lake. Not only that, but visitors who have the proper equiptment, could go fishing or jetskiing and take advantage of the lake's calm water.

Another interesting and adventurous thing to do in Apoyo is camping. It'd definitely be an unforgettable occation to go there with friends, set up a tent, make a fire right next to the shore of this beautiful lake and go for a late night dive. Sure, there's also the choice of going to one of the small hotels located just meters from the shore.

In my opinion, Apoyo is the most amusing lake in the country. First of all, it's a very beautiful and clean. Its accesibility is excellent. It's a protected area. It provides an amazing scenery. A visit to either its lookouts or the lake itself is certainly inexpensive. For all these reasons and more, a lot of people have built summer house so they can enjoy what this remarkable lake has to offer. Hopefully, Laguna de Apoyo could continue to attract more and more visitors each year so that it could help with the local economy.

From Managua, Laguna de Apoyo could be reached by getting on the Carretera a Masaya (Masaya Highway). After the intersection to "Catarina", it becomes the Managua-Granada Highway. The entry is approximately 10 km after this intersection, to the right. The entry cost to the natural reserve is just about a dollar per vehicle.
Catarina could be reached by getting on the Managua-Masaya Highway and following directions.
