Nicaragua's Natural Beauty:
Momotombo & Momotombito Volcano |
| |
 Now,
let's continue with another pair of volcanoes: Momotombo & its little
neighbor Momotombito. Momotombo has become Nicaragua's symbol and throughout
the years, it has helped and damage the country's economy
Momotombo, located just off the North-Western shore of Lake Managua, is
a very active volcano. The towering peak rises 1,258 meters above sea level,
making it viewable from almost any point from the capital city, Managua.
This majestic volcano, which possesses one of the most perfect cones in
the world, has erupted many times throughtout its excistence. Since 1524
(when it recorded its first eruption), Momotombo has erupted seven times:
in 1578, 1610, 1736, 1849, 1887, 1902 and its last one was in 1905. So far,
Nicaragua's being able to take advantage of its activity but in the past,
it was a nightmare for the Spaniards and native people. |
ITS IMPACT |
| |
Momotombo has being contributing in a great way to the country's economy
since '82. However, it has caused a lot of problems as well.
In
1610, this stratovolcano recorded a major eruption forcing the relocation
of the then capital city, León, to its current site. The original
location is now known as "León Viejo" (Old León).
In 2000, it was declared by U.N.E.S.C.O
(United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization) as
an archeological, cultural and historical site important to humankind.
This volcano has helped a lot too. It provides the country with a considerable
amoust of geothermal power since '82. It's also a big part in the country's
volcano and eco-tourism industry. It provides an excellent great option
for those who like climbing, hiking, adventure and canopy. The ones who
reach Momotombo's summit, at more than one km high, will have breathtaking
views of the Maribios Volcanic Range on Nicaragua's Pacific Coast.
