 These
are a pair of nothing short of spectacular volcanoes: the near-perfect-cone
Concepción, the taller one, and Maderas, the dormant one. These volcanoes
are very tough to climb, even for experts, but once at the top, it's all
worth it. The twin volcanoes are sitting on a very unusual ( it's made by
2 volcanic peaks) island called (Rivas), which is the largest freshwater
island on the planet. Ometepe is located on the mid-western area of Lake,
which is yet another wonder Nicaragua possesses.
Concepción, on Ometepe's north-western tip, is the taller one and
without a doubt, is the one that causes more trouble to the locals. Its
summit reachest an altitute of 1,610 meters above sea level. That makes
it the second (to San
Cristóbal) highest volcano in the country. Maderas, at 1,394
meters high is the subsequent on the list. There's no question which one
is the more active one. In the past hundred years, Concepción has
erupted twenty-four times; its last one being in 1986. It still remains
active as it occasionaly showers the nearby residents with ash. In the other
hand, there is no recorded activity by the Maderas Volcano.

Concepción possesses almost a perfect cone. In fact, it makes very
good competition to Momotombo as the one with the most perfect cone not
only in the country, but in the world. Due to this, climbing and hiking
this volcano can be very, very stressful and difficult, unlike climbing
Maderas, which is not easy, but certainly not as tough as its brother.
Maderas Volcano is actually a Natural Reserve. It's covered with dense a
vegetation and coffee plantations. It's a perfect site to practice eco-tourism
as well as adventure, not to mention hiking and climbing. All kinds of flora
and fauna are found while climbing the volcano. And at the top, there's
a beautiful little lake.
Unfortunately, I have not yet visited Ometepe. But I will soon and then
I'll have a complete site on this unique island and the pair of volcanoes.
Pretty soon. And when i do this, I'll move this page to the Protected Areas
Section.
