Nicaragua Cities: Masaya
The City of Flowers

Masaya is a really fun an cool place to spend the day. This province has a lot to offer. There's its volcano, the famous artisan market, which are the most visited attractions in the province, but there's also Catarina, El Coyotepe and Lake Apoyo. If you have a day to spend, visiting Masaya would definitely help you enjoy it.

 TYPICAL TOUR: VOLCANO & MARKET

The Masaya Volcano National Park is a must-visit if at least passing by Masaya. This place provides panoramic views of the surroundings that include: Lake Masaya, Managua & Cocibolca; Mombacho, Momotombo & Momotombito Volcanoes and more. Not only that, visitors could amaze theirselves as they take a very close look at the lake of lava in the Masaya Crater. Other things visitors can do is visit the museum, picnic for a while of explore the natural trails; one of these lead all the way to Lake Masaya. An extremely cool tour is The Bad Cave where dozens of thousands bats live. The Masaya Volcano definitely worth checkig out.

Masaya's old market has been transformed into THE place to buy artistry. The country's most talented people, the Masaya artisans, sell their creative items here. They make almost everything: furniture, sculptures, wood carvings, paintings, carpets, hats and of course, Masaya's famous hand-made hammocks. These hammocks, made of the best quality material, are currently being exported to Central America, some South American countries and European countries; and North America. This market is widely visited by tourists who always enjoy what these artisans have to offer.

HIDDEN SPOTS: EL COYOTEPE, LAKE APOYO

So, those are the most visited places in Masaya: the volcano and the artisan market. Great places but what if you're in the mood to try something else? El Coyotepe Fortres would be just perfect.

El Coyotepe, open 24-hrs a day, is a pretty good place if you feel like exploring. During the day, visitors can check out the surrounding landscapes like Masaya city, lake and volcano. Also, one may take a tour around the fortress, which is very dark even in the day time. At night, it gets more interesting because when touring the place, it's pitch-black unless you have a flashlight. For a small amount of money, the guides will give a tour of the fortres, which was a jail, and tell you stories (mostly made up) of the place while walking through the corridors and tiny cells where thousands of people were believed to be tortured and killed cruelly. The cruelty that the prisoners lived is observed in the graphics, paintings and graffity on the walls. It's a pretty cool and spooky place to visit, especially at night.

Lake Apoyo Another place that, until recently, was considered undiscovered is Catarina. This is a little town famous for its lookout, "El Mirador de Catarina". The lookout offers a breathtaking view of the gigantic Lake Apoyo, Mombacho Volcano, Granada City and even Lake Cocibolca. At this place, not only can you enjoy the beautiful scenery and the cool breeze, but you can also try a delicious Nicaraguan dish and listen to the sound of "Marimba" being played by one of the locals. Besides, you may also check out the beautiful plants and the hand-made items by the local venders.

Now, I've noticed that Catarina can't be called "undiscovered" anymore since a lot of tourist visit the place now. But, the lake itself is almost undiscovered, at least for now. People can drive down all the way to Lake Apoyo. Its water is very clean and clear but very, very deep. People can practice water sports there. The temperature down there is very pleasant and there's a constant cool breeze. It's an excellent option to get a way from the noise for a little while, at least. The Masaya "Malecón" is a pretty nice place to visit too. It's a lookout overlooking Lake and Masaya Volcano. If bored at night and want to party hard, there's a club there, "Coco Jambo", in my opinion, one of the best ones in the country. Also, the Masaya Stadium is right there so if you want to check out some Nicaraguan Baseball, just to there and see play the "San Fernandos", the local team.

Masaya has a lot to offer to its visitors; from natural beauty, with its volcano and couple of lakes, to human creativity, with its locals' artistic abilities and not to forget its rich colonial past.
