Welcome to
Nicaragua's Caribbean Coast, the other face of country. This zone is very,
very different to the rest, especially in the cultural aspect. Learn more
about the differences as well as this coast's natural beauties.
Formerly
known as Zelaya, this area of the country, which is almost half of the total
territory, is composed by two regions: R.A.A.N (Región
Autónoma Atlántico Norte ; North-East) and R.A.A.S(Región
Autónoma Atlántico Sur ; South-East) with 450 km of
coastline from North to South. Puerto Cabezas ( I
WAS BORN HERE! ) is the main city in RAAN while Bluefields is in
RAAS. Other important places in this area are the Corn Islands, Pearl Lagoon,
El Rama, Siuna, San Carlos and San Juan del Norte.

The region's biggest income comes from the sea, however, it does possess
other important ones. The biggest industry, in both RAAN and RAAS is the
exportation of lobsters, shrimps and other sea goods. There's also the industry
of gold in small amounts. The tourism industry has been increasing significantly
in the past couple of years. Currently, there are a number of investments
in Puerto Cabezas as well as in Bluefields. Also, there are other projects
to build hotels in Corn Island. But, the biggest business in the future
could be the possible construction of a "dry canal" through the
country that can certainly improve the region's and the country's economy.
Back in the colonial times, the Caribbean Coast was conquered by the British,
contrary to the Pacific
Coast, which was conquered by the Spaniards. As a result, the region's inhabitants
are of Jamaican, African and British decendants and speak jamaican-style
English. The Jamaican roots can be heard on the radiostations because reggae
is widely listened to. Unlike the Pacific Coast, Catholicism is barely practiced
here. Most people are "Moravos".
In
the Caribbean Coast, there are several ethnic groups of African heritage.
Probably the biggest one are the "Miskitos" ethnic community who
speak a dialect of the same name. There's also the "Ramas" and
"Sumos" community who also speak dialects of the same name. Sadly,
according to the last census, there are only 649 Ramas family whom still
speak their dialect but only 24 families speak it fluently.
The city of Bluefields hosts perhaps the most colorful and fun event in
Nicaragua. During the entire month of May, the "Palo de Mayo"
festival is celebrated. People dance to the rhythm of Palo de Mayo, a sensual
dance of afro-caribbean background born in the Caribbean Coast, all day
and all night. People from all over the country gather in the city and fill
its street as they have a blast for an entire month. There are many musical
group promoting the Palo de Mayo rhythm, which is widely listened to in
the country, but the most recognized and oldest one is "Dimensión
Costeña".
The Caribbean Coast is
full with protected areas like Natural and Biological Reserves and some
absolutely amazing beaches giving the area a great opportunity to develop
its tourism industry.
 A
pair of paradisiacal islands are Corn
and Little Corn Island. These small islands are surrounded by white-sand
beaches, coral reefs, the typical coconut trees and of course and crystal
clear waters that provide perfect conditions for diving and snorkeling.
Not only are these islands beautiful and pacific, they're also very cheap.
That's before massive tourism starts to come here.
 Some
50 miles N.E of Bluefields, there's the "Cayos Perlas"
(Pearl Keys). This is an archipelago composed by dozens of little
virgin just waiting to be explored.
As mentioned before, there are several protected areas on Nicaragua's Caribbean
Coast. One example is the Miskito Keys Biological Reserve, located about
90KM N.E of Puerto Cabezas. There's also the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve,
an extremely important protected area and the largest one not only in the
country, but also in Central America. This one covers part of the Central
Region and R.A.A.N.. And the Indio-Maíz Biological Reserve, located
in R.A.A.S, named after the two rivers surrounding the protected area: Indio
and Maíz River (A.K.A Punta Gorda River).
As of November 2003, that's all I have in my Cities Section. I'm working
on getting more pictures of the East Coast. For now, please continue surfing
my Nicaragua website, as it was designed, and check out the Volcanoes
Section with in-depth info on: Concepción, Maderas, Momotombo,
Cerro Negro, Masaya and Mombacho, much more.
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY CHECKED OUT THE OTHER SECTIONS, DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE
ONE? ANYTHING YOU DIDN'T LIKE? LET ME AND OTHERS KNOW IN THE GUEST
BOOK. IF YOU HAVEN'T SURFED THE OTHER SECTIONS ... WELL, GO AHEAD AND
THEN GIVE YOUR FEEDBACK, IT'LL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. |
